Kwanzaa Activities for Kids
The seven principles made simple, plus easy activities for little hands.

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of family, community, and African heritage held from December 26 to January 1. For kids, it's a warm, hands-on holiday — lighting candles, sharing what they're thankful for, and learning seven big ideas about how to be a good person and a good neighbor.
Here's how to explain Kwanzaa to young children, plus simple activities you can do at home.
The seven principles, explained for kids
Kwanzaa celebrates seven principles — one for each day. You don’t need to be perfect about the Swahili names; the ideas are what matter. Say them simply:
- Umoja (Unity) — we stick together like family.
- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) — I get to decide who I want to be.
- Ujima (Working Together) — we help each other and solve problems as a team.
- Ujamaa (Sharing) — we support each other, like shopping at a neighbor’s shop.
- Nia (Purpose) — we each have something special to do.
- Kuumba (Creativity) — we make things and leave the world more beautiful.
- Imani (Faith) — we believe in ourselves and each other.
Easy Kwanzaa activities for little ones
- Make a paper kinara (candle holder) with seven candles — three red, three green, one black — and "light" one each day.
- Start a gratitude circle: each night, everyone shares one thing they’re thankful for.
- Do a "Kuumba" craft day — draw, build, or decorate something together.
- Cook or bake a simple dish as a family to celebrate sharing (Ujamaa).
- Read a story about family and heritage together before bed.

Frequently asked questions
How do you explain Kwanzaa to a preschooler?
Keep it to the feeling: Kwanzaa is a special week to celebrate our family, our neighbors, and where we come from. We light a candle each night and talk about one good way to treat people. That’s plenty for a preschooler — the seven principles can grow in as they do.
When is Kwanzaa celebrated?
Kwanzaa runs for seven days, from December 26 to January 1 each year.
Do you have to be a certain religion to celebrate Kwanzaa?
No. Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration of African heritage and community values, not a religious holiday, so families of any faith can take part.
