Harriet Tubman for Kids

Freedom fighter!

Harriet Tubman, illustrated for children

In Maryland, around 1825, a little girl named Araminta Ross looked up at the sky. Everyone called her 'Minty.' She watched birds flying freely through the clouds. 'Look at those birds, Mama,' Minty said. 'They can fly anywhere they want!' Minty's mother held her close. 'One day, baby, you'll be free too.' Minty was born into slavery, which meant she and her family were not free to make their own choices. But even as a little girl, Minty had BIG dreams. 'I'm going to be free one day,' Minty whispered to the birds. 'Just like you!'
