Fun facts about Black Music History

  • Almost every popular music genre in America was created by Black musicians! Rock and roll, jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, and hip-hop all have Black roots.
  • Some spirituals had secret messages hidden in them! 'Wade in the Water' told people to walk in rivers so dogs couldn't track their scent.
  • Ma Rainey was called the 'Mother of the Blues.' She started performing when she was just 14 years old and became one of the first great blues recording artists!
  • Louis Armstrong learned to play the trumpet at a boys' home when he was just 13 years old. He went on to become one of the most famous musicians in the world!
  • Ella Fitzgerald won 13 Grammy Awards during her career! She was the first African American woman to win a Grammy Award.
