Shirley Chisholm for Kids
First Black woman in Congress

Hi, I'm Emeka! Today I want to tell you about an amazing woman named Shirley Chisholm! 🌟 Shirley was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1924. When she was young, her parents sent her to live with her grandmother in Barbados for a few years. There, she got a great education and learned to speak with confidence. When Shirley came back to Brooklyn, she noticed something unfair. Many kids in her neighborhood didn't have good schools or playgrounds. Their families struggled to get by. Even though Shirley was just a young girl, she started asking questions: 'Why don't we have what other neighborhoods have? Why isn't this fair?' Shirley loved to read and learn. She was curious about everything! Her teachers saw how smart and determined she was. They encouraged her to keep studying and dreaming big. Shirley's parents worked very hard - her father was a factory worker and her mother was a seamstress. They taught Shirley that education was the key to changing the world. 📚✨ Even as a child, Shirley knew she wanted to make things better for her community!
