Fun facts about Sojourner Truth
- Sojourner means 'traveler' and Truth means 'honesty' - she chose this name because she traveled the country speaking the truth!
- Sojourner was one of 10-12 children, but she was separated from most of them when they were sold to different slaveholders!
- Isabella walked alone to a court house and won a case against a white man - this was almost unheard of in the 1820s!
- When her enslaver caught up with her, the Van Wagenen family bought her freedom for $20 - she stayed with them until she was legally free!
- Sojourner said God told her to 'travel up and down the land' speaking the truth - so that's exactly what she did!
